Fun for Families

The Kitsap County Genealogy Expo

is a great place for families. I mean, what is genealogy all about, but our families? Children love to hear stories about their ancestors.

As we did last year, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., there will be a variety of fun activities for children and families in the Cultural Hall at the Expo. 

• You can dress up like a pioneer
• You can find a family history picture to color
• You can have your family picture taken

This is just some of the fun that can be had at the Expo!

So, bring your family, and have a family history adventure together!

This year at the Kitsap County Genealogy Expo, we will have a consultation table in the Cultural Hall. Like a light shining in the dark, the helpers there will make every effort to guide you to the answers you're seeking. They can assist you by sharing research techniques, leading you to resources that may be just what you need to locate that elusive piece of information. You will have the opportunity to visit, one-on-one, with a consultant who has much research experience, and a desire to assist. If one can't help, another can. We will do our best to help you find success!

Why Attend a Genealogy Expo??

I was trying to figure out why someone should attend the Kitsap County Genealogy Expo. Because, then, you know, I could do a better job of convincing folks to come! I know I've benefited personally from going to events like this one, but I figured it was because I really wanted to be there, and I was really hoping to learn something new.

Then, I realized that one of the unexpected outcomes, of a very pleasant nature, was the opportunity of spending time, a fairly long time, with a whole bunch of people who also wanted to be there. A whole bunch of people, who, like me, loved (or, were at least interested in) genealogy and family history. 

We shared family stories with each other. We traded business cards (more like calling cards in most of our cases). We rejoiced and lamented over a variety of research experiences. And, we just plain reveled in being with other people who love what we love!

The Final Push!

The Expo is right around the corner, and we are in the final stretch with our preparations.

The live presentations are all scheduled. Our presenters are excited and looking forward to sharing their knowledge, experience, and expertise with those who attend their classes.

Our exhibitors and consultants are ready to show and share in the Cultural Hall.

We look forward to seeing many who have attended before, along with lots of new folks. All of us with the same interest - our family history!

Always something to learn...

With our 2nd annual Genealogy Expo just around the virtual corner, like Saturday, I am reminded of the many things I've learned from attending events such as this one. 

One time, I was privileged to be present in a class on English research. As I my grandfather was born in England, that is always an area of interest for me. This particular presentation was chock-full of wonderful information. One of the first things I did after the conference was go into Google Maps and search for where my family lived. 

The picture included here is of the very street where my great-grandfather, John Richard Hoyle, was born; Rings Row. He was the only child of John Hoyle and Mary Lord, but the youngest of at least nine children, his father having had two previous wives. While in Google Maps, I was able to change to street view and see the very buildings where they and their neighbors, many of whom were also relatives, lived. It was amazing to me, and led me to further findings about my family and the area in which they lived - all prompted by the information gained at a genealogy event.

We are SO excited!

Our presentation schedule is finally complete. We have some fantastic classes on the roster again, this year. There is truly something for everyone, beginner to expert, young to not-so-young. We hope you'll take the opportunity to read through them and make your choices.

NOW is a perfect time to register! 
While registration is not mandatory, it is very helpful as we continue making preparations for this great event. (It also helps us feel better, knowing that at least some people are attending.) ☺

2nd Annual Kitsap County Genealogy Expo

Silverdale WA Stake Center

8:30 a.m. ~ 5:00 p.m.

The Expo is really taking on a life of its own, now. We have a great line-up of presentations already, and hope to have more. We have some exhibitors, as well, and will be adding to that group, too.

This year, the Expo will be held in the Silverdale WA Stake Center on Nels Nelson Road in Silverdale. After much deliberation and discussion, the location change was made largely due to the faster, and hopefully, more stable, internet connection. The building is larger, too, so there is lots of room to grow, and grow we will!

You can find more information on our web page, Kitsap County Genealogy Expo, by clicking on the name. Be warned: It is a fluid site, meaning, we're always updating and correcting. :) However, the latest class descriptions are there. The schedule will need some tweaking, but by the time we open for registration, it'll all be good! We also post periodically on our Facebook page - here, and try to keep the blog pages updated.
